Peacock Stonefly


Skwala stoneflies are an often over-looked spring hatch on some Western streams. Like other large stonefly nymphs, this fly needs to be weighted so it will drift near the river bottom.

How to Fish

Dead drift on the bottom with an trout indicator or tight line presentation. The best areas are bouldery sections, riffles, just below riffles, and drop offs just below riffles.

HOOK: TMC 5263, sizes 6-10

THREAD: Olive or brown to match body

TAIL: Two white or olive goose biots, tied in a "V"

BODY: Three strands of peacock herl wound together and wrapped around hook

WINGCASE: Turkey quill pulled over thorax

THORAX: Light brown or olive dubbing to match body

HEAD: Brown or olive thread to match body
