Chubby Chernobyl

HOOK: 1X fine wire, 2X long shank, turned-down eye; e.g., TMC 5212 or equivalent. Sizes 6-12

THREAD: To match foam

TAIL: Pearl Krystal Flash

DUBBED BODY: Rust fur, antron, or synthetic

FOAM TOP: 2mm brown craft foam trimmed to shape

WINGS: White poly yarn (two wings, front and back)

LEGS: Sili legs or equivalent. Tie in with wings

Chubbies look stupid from above, but from below--the fish's point of view--they look pretty good. They also float well because of the foam. Being bulky, however, they can be a pain to cast accurately, especially if there is a wind.

Vary the size and body color to match other stoneflies:

  • Golden stonefly: size 6-10, yellow dubbing and thread, tan foam
  • Salmonfly: size 6-10, dressed as shown here
  • Yellow sally: size 12, yellow dubbing, foam, and thread
  • Skwala: size 12, olive dubbing and thread, brown foam
  • Shortwing stonefly: like golden stonefly, but note the size differences for male and female

A Chubby Norman has a different wing color.

How to Fish

With the foam, you shouldn't need floatant. Use standard dry fly presentations. The best places are just downstream of downwind from overhanging trees or other vegetation, near rocks, and along current seams.

Find fly patterns by type, food, or name. Searchs can cover just Westfly's standard patterns or the entire database.
