Steelhead

► The Sandy is usually clear if the freezing level is below 5,000 feet, and usually murky if it's above 6,000 feet.

► A few early summer steelhead will enter the river this month along with spring chinook; they overlap briefly with late winter-run steelhead. Use traditional tactics and standard winter steelhead swinging flies.

General

► The Sandy offers good fly fishing from Dodge Bridge to Dabney Park. The Oxbow Park to Dabney stretch is an easy drift for boaters. There is also good bank access in the Oxbow Park area, but you'll have to walk a ways. From Dodge to Oxbow, boaters need to have excellent whitewater skills and a large inflatable boat; this section is not good water for a McKenzie-style hard boat.
