Steelhead

Traditional tactics with standard winter steelhead swinging flies are your best choice.

► The Sandy clears quickly after a storm, and it fishes well when it's on the high side.

► The east wind can be a problem here, so when it's blowing hard in the Gorge it can be nasty on the Sandy.

► The Sandy is usually clear if the freezing level is below 5,000 feet, and usually muddy if it's above 6,000 feet.

General

► The Sandy offers good winter fly fishing from Dodge Bridge to Dabney Park. The Oxbow Park to Dabney stretch is an easy drift for boaters. There is also good bank access in the Oxbow Park area, but you'll have to walk a ways. From Dodge to Oxbow, boaters need to have excellent whitewater skills and a large inflatable boat; it's not good water for a McKenzie-style hard boat.
