I really like the second one Bill. It has a wonderful three dimensional feel.

Thanks Kim. That's the challenge with these, and most paintings of clear water; attempting to express the different planes convincingly. The lily pads help, but have to be drawn as accurate ellipses, appearing to be all on the same plane. Can drive a painter nuts, but worth the try.

I can only imagine the difficulty. Nicely done Bill. And well worth the effort!

I have a little page of sketched ideas for this series...this group will be conjured entirely from my thick noggin...very eccentric I guess...

            Painting

            Painting...is a compulsion,
A need to do a thing,
An obligation that feeds the soul,
that helps you sort out or find something
It is nothing that can be taught
Not a thing to be taken lightly.
Art is a passion and battle
            That soothes and completes
            If you don't understand that
Or only look to the end product
You don't get any of it.
So how can anyone instruct you?
            Creating is a passion play,
A way of thinking day by day
            That makes you different
            than the defining folks that
            Think it is just play
            Created art should matter,
            Be individual and defining
Not some example of image mining.
            Originality, unique thought
            a semblance created
            of a conjured thought,
            Expressed in your own way
            On any given day
            As yours alone.

            ~Skip Enge, artist

Iwrite a lot about art, and feeling and life and perspective ...Art is a balance of head and heart.very touchy feelie, it ain't just product to sell, it's a real emotive thoughtful balance

Very cool action shot, Patrick. I found one of those clinging to my screen door a few days ago.

I agree - #2. I like the way the wing fills that space and echoes the flowers pointing in the same direction.

Thanks guys. I agree #2 is the better composition. I like detail of the wings and back in the first one. There were 5 or 6 of them buzzing around a bunch of Davidson's Penstemon (I am pretty sure on the ID - the leaves in these pics are from a different plant) on the way down to the docs at Crater Lake on Sunday.

Nice! We finally went last fall and I really struggled to make a decent image. Very frustrating after seeing so many amazing images of the hills.

Thanks Bill and Patrick! I actually was looking for locations around Prairie City. Just happened by the turn off to the Painted Hills National Monument and thought, why not? My first time out there. What a place.

Here's the flier for a show of my recent works. I hope some of my Westfly colleagues can take it in. Daughter, Alice is threatening to join me with some new works for the month of August.
